Ladies, Ladies, Ladies

What you flaunt is up to you

Throughout most of life, it pays to be a chick. Guys take you out to dinner, bouncers never make you pay a cover charge, and gentlemen across the nation are ready to hold doors for you and lay their coats across puddles on rainy days. That still happens everywhere right? No? Just me? Liked the sound of it though huh? The comment box accepts phone numbers ladies.

In snowboarding, it usually isn’t equal, most contests are geared towards the guys and the girls are usually overlooked in some capacity. Prizes aren’t equal and sponsorships are usually based on looks more than skill, but there are a few core companies out there that are as dedicated to your progression as they are getting pretty faces into their clothes.

The Billabong Flaunt It tour is hitting slopes across North America for yet another season, inviting girls of all levels out to have a good time, much like the invites you’ll get from frat boys when you get to college, but with a very different result. Events consist of a morning slopestyle and an afternoon rail jam. The judges they use are bastions of patience, too. They sit there all day, allowing you as many runs as you want to nail your run. There’s cash for the winners and prizes for everybody and if you do good enough, Billabong will fly you out to Sierra-at-Tahoe for the finals this spring! And if you’ve never rode California in the spring, this fact alone ought to be enough to get you practicing your railslides and nosepresses on-hill.

Here’s the schedule:

Jan 22- Blue Mountain, ON
Feb 12- Sunshine, AB
Feb 26- Big White, BC
Mar 5- Mount Seymour, BC
Mar 19- Waterville Valley, NH
Mar 26- Tremblant, QC
Apr 9- (FINALS) Sierra-At-Tahoe, CA

Art Park at Mammoth

Snowboarding is always progressing, and now there’s this. The Art Park at Mammoth has been getting all sorts of attention lately, and could be the next thing as far as collaborations between our world and the art world. What the art park offers, is a place for art to be shown to everyone with a lift ticket, like an art gallery in the woods. Currently, the featured art is that of and inspired by hometown hero Jeff Anderson. The pieces are not just hung on trees or set up on easels, but instead they take up the real estate usually reserved for corporate sponsors…the skirts of rails and boxes. JLA’s art adorns the sides of rails as well as the top of some features.

The features that get the art are big league at it’s best. Which is a nice change of pace since the insurance companies have undoubtedly been the cause behind the shrinking feature trend at most resorts lately. Alex Dawoud and Tyler Flanagan are not midgets…those are just some huge rails. That kinker is film-worthy as far as we’re concerned, and plenty pretty to look at too. The set up is supposed to change a few times over the season too.

No word yet as to who the other artists will be, so if you’ve got a favorite artist or you think your own stuff is the bee’s knees then send Mammoth Mountain a shout and see if you can get in. Personally, I think some Jamie Lynn art would be pretty cool, maybe we can get some of that going for the Volcom PBRJ finals that hit Mammoth in the spring!

Minnesota Open for Business!

With the temps dipping like they have been it was only a matter of time until one of our Minnesota resorts stepped up to the plate and cranked up the lifts to the mid-westerners.

Not surprisingly Wild Mountain got the jump on the season for the 35th year in a row when they opened Friday, October 29th. Tickets are only $10 bucks.

Hot on Wild Mountains tail was Trollhaugen in Wisconsin who opened on Saturday. Both resorts plan on staying open on the weekends and closing during mid-week but it’s probably a good idea to call ahead to be sure they are open.

Getting gnarly at Trollhaugen. Anybody out there in internet land get to shred yet?

Mammoth Mountain is for Lovers

Dearest New Trick,

Ever since I first laid eyes on you in this season’s newest video, I knew that you and I were destined for one another. Countless nights I spent pining for you, dreaming my way through the fall until those first flakes of white gold began to sail downward upon our local slopes.

Let's Get It On

Timberline's Summer has just turned into Winter!

Timberline's Summer has just turned into Winter!

That brisk Autumn breeze you’ve been waking up to lately that seems to hint at the approaching winter with more voracity each day just got a little stronger. The 2010-2011 shred season has officially begun, and Oregon’s Timberline Lodge has cut the ribbon to get things started.

Timberline oiled up the shivs and fired up the Magic Mile and Palmer chairlifts on Friday, October 1st, staking their claim as first resort to open this season. What modern magic made this moment materialize? None, actually, the Palmer snowfield, which rests more than 7,000 feet above sea level is often frozen year-round. Thanks to some late-Spring storms last season that padded the base, along with careful maintenance and grooming over the Summer, kept the snowfield in tact, according to the Timberline team.

Visit the Japanese Alps… Virtually

I’ve seen footage of snowboarders in Japan boosting twisted trees and popping pillows in feather light powder, but the Japanes Alps are a whole other game altogether. This time-lapse film is scenic vs. shred, but just picture these 9,000-plus foot tall mountains coated in hundreds of inches of snow. For a look at Japan’s resorts, snow conditions, and lodging, check out Snow Japan.

Gear'd Up: Limited Edition Ride

ride_1011_dh2-4_156w-21

Adding to its long history of artist collaborations, Ride Snowboards just released the limited edition DH2.4, featuring graphics from the art collective Dethkills. The DH 2.4 will hit select stores on October 1, but availability is limited.

Here’s what Ride has to say about the tech: “DH 2.4 features our brand new board shape – Hybrid ProRize. Offering primo response, pop and landing stability, this unique twin shape provides the best of both the rocker and camber worlds. The DH 2.4 combines the surfy feel of rocker with the hard charging pop you get from traditional camber for a hook-free feel that maintains snap.”

Five Thousand Dollars & Zero Sense

Picture 5

Three months and Five G’s later Snowboarder Magazine and Gatorade have pulled off the fiercest online video battle the internet-inclined side of snowboarding has ever seen.

The winner of the bracket-style brawl is non-other than a foreign competitor. Actually, both the finalist were foreign. Scandinavian competitors Helgasons.com took down French Canadian’s NuuLife Cinema for the win.

According to our unofficial calculations, the Helgasons.com crew is walking away with 592,658 Kronas. Sounds like they made off like bandits.

Check out SNOWBOARDER.com for more details and bonus video from the Helgason crew.

‘Merica, will any of you step up to the challenge next year?

Product Review 2010/2011 Flow: Quantum Snowboard

quantum

The Flow Quantum is a freestyle park specific board. Most well know by the Olympic Bronze Halfpipe winner Scotty Lago. This year’s board features a TruTwin shape with a pop camber tech for that all around control you need whether in the pipe, park or riding all mountain. The tip and tail were made with a little more flex to give you that added press everyone loves these days. The Quantum’s base is an impressive sintered 4000 material, making this board hold speed to the highest level.  Flow has used a Lite Quadrax Glass with carbon strands in the topsheet to give the board added pop and durability.

The graphics were done by Mr. Scotty Lago himself which I must say look pretty good. The Quantum is coming in four sizes for the 2010-2011 lineup – 150, 152, 155, 158. There’s something there for everyone. The sidecut features a progressive dual transition which has a mellower radius between the feet and an aggressive radius towards the tips and then going back to mellower radius at the top. This was added to give you added grip at your feet to power in and out of hard carves. Followed by the Whiskey Double Malt tech which puts four titanal forks beneath the heal and toe areas, which transfer the energy toward the edges giving you quicker response and increased edge hold at large speeds.

All in all I really enjoyed riding the board. It held a good edge, rode really aggressive and responsive and just felt good. The Flex was a little stiffer than I am used to, but kind of nice cause the amount of pop out of it was unreal.  I would defiantly recommend this board to anyone looking to step up their game. I would say this board is not meant for rookies.

Lago Gets A Midnight Kiss

Bronze medalist Scotty Lago

Bronze medalist Scotty Lago

America’s halfpipe bronze medalist has left the Olympics. Snowboarding’s Scotty Lago is packing his bags and heading home after getting a little too friendly with a female fan.

The muckracking Web site TMZ.com took a break from stalking Hollywood celebutantes long enough for one of their photographers to get these photos of Scotty showing off his medal in his own special way.

Lago’s not facing any further punishment, but the IOC heads apparently weren’t impressed with his actions so he got Vancouver’s equivalent of an honorable discharge.

2010 Olympic Halfpipe

There’s this event going on today, north of the border, maybe you’ve heard something about it? Apparently Vancouver’s got this little grassroots halfpipe competition going on called the Olympics!

That’s right, the stunt ditch will fill up with stars this afternoon, and by bedtime the world will have a new men’s pipe champion. The United States Olympic Team is looking good too.

Shaun White has been training like a man possessed with private pipes and foam pits and he’s coming in hot off an X Games victory. Does the world have a secret weapon out there that can de-throne the defending champ? Iouri Podladtchikov and Kazuhiro Kokubu put up a decent fight at the X Games, too, garnering second and third, respectively.

Joining Shaun for the stars and stripes are Louie Vito and Scotty Lago, two high-flyin’ young guns in search of their first taste of Olympic glory. Both guys have been using this season as a coming out party, affirming that they have the ability to become legitimate contenders on the global stage.
