The House Boardshop in on site this week in Copper Colorado for the Vitamin Water/Snowboard Magazine Am Throwdown and the five day event couldn’t have started off on a better foot.

The five finalist rider/filmer duo’s who won a free trip to Copper this week by submitting edits that were voted on over at Snowboardmag.com. After arriving on Sunday evening they were briefed by Editor-in-Chief Chris Owens, going over the rules and schedule for the week. The teams have five days to film a 1:30 video edit. The edits must be filmed within Copper Mountain resort and turned in by midnight on Friday. The vids will be judged by Snowboard Magazine and House Boardshop staff and the winning team will be walking away with 5,ooo bucks.

After being debriefed and receiving gift certificates to The House Boardshop (stoked!) the teams were set free to do their thing. Day one turned out to be sunny and sick and it was hard to keep up with the five teams as they scattered about the mountain getting down to business.

It may come as a big shocker to some people but the halfpipe was not the only competition that went down at the Copper Mountain Grand Prix stop. Paul Mitchell got its hand in there to sponsor the Progression Session, which had a pretty sick set up for a little slope style action. The run started off with a giant 15 foot high butter box that launched off to a huge step down and that led into another butter box and rail at the bottom of the run. From what I’ve seen it looked like this set up made for some pretty sick moves. And The House’s very own Gabi Viteri made us proud as she snagged 3rd! Congrats Gabi! Keep doin your thang…

The Progression Session came out lookin like this:

Men:

1. Jordan Phillips, Canada
2. Gjermund Braten, Norway
3. Johnny Paxon, Gresham, OR

Women:

1. Hana Beaman, Salt Lake City, UT
2. Colleen Quigley, San Clemente, CA
3. Gabi Viterri, Breckenridge, CO

The game was played out rather well as the first stop of the Grand Prix was concluded with 87 guys sending it in the halfpipe to get to the finals, 16 of them making it through, and crowning our first winners in the men’s and women’s halfpipe.

The first stop at Copper Mountain was an insane battle that included some drama, bad weather conditions and a few little twists and turns in the story line. There were some big names missing on the finals list for both the men and women. Like I said in the earlier post Hana Teter and Danny Kass both sat this Copper stop out with minor injuries. But what is even more unreal are the heavy hitter riders that were there competing that didn’t make it. That includes people like Torah Bright, Scotty Lago, Luke Mitrani, Kevin Pearce and Danny Davis.

I guess when the Olympics are on the line it’s game on for anyone that’s got the heart. An article from Grind TV told us that what was the spectacle to see for men’s riding was not the finals, when they had terrible conditions, but the qualifying round. Every rider was giving it all and more than they had to move on. Everyone was out to prove themselves and get their name on the list of probable Olympic contenders. Young bloods are also making this competition a little stiffer. Take for example 15 year old Madeline Schaffrick that came out of no where on the women’s side, or 19 year old Zack Black on the men’s that ended up taking 3rd. You just never know who you need to watch out for in this sport.

If you missed this round, have no fear there are still four more stops to catch all the action. Which is what many of these riders are relying on right now too. Copper was a pretty intense kick off for the Grand Prix, but I have a feeling it’s only going to get bigger from here.

Here’s how the finals turned out:

Men:
1. Shaun White, Carlsbad, CA, 47.00
2. Louie Vito, Sandy, UT, 45.60
3. Zack Black, Breckenridge, CO, 44.10
4. Fredrik Austbo, Norway, 41.20
5. JJ Thomas, Golden, CO, 41.10
6. Greg Bretz, Mammoth Lakes, CA, 40.00
7. Steve Fisher, Breckenridge, CO, 39.40
8. Tore-V Holvik, Norway, 34.80
9. Ryo Aono, Japan, 34.00
10. Jack Mitrani, Mammoth, CA, 28.80

Women:
1. Kelly Clark, Mt. Snow, VT, 44.50
2. Gretchen Bleiler, Aspen, CO, 42.60
3. Soko Yamaoka, Japan, 40.20
4. Quera Castellet, Spain, 30.50
5. Ellery Hollingsworth, Stratton, VT, 35.80
6. Madeline Schaffrick, Steamboat Springs, Co, 35.50
7. Holly Crawford, Australia, 24.00
8. Clair Bidez, Minturn, CO, 13.60

There are six sections a snowboarder can compete in to be in the Olympics: men’s and women’s boarder cross, halfpipe and GPS (Giant Parallel Slalom). And pretty sure most of our eyes are going to be fixed on who is getting on the halfpipe team.
There is a lot of speculation as to who might make the cut for the 2010 Vancouver games. As for the guys obviously we’re all thinking Shaun White, hands down not a problem. But there are still three more spots to fill, so who’s it gonna be? Loui Vito has been on the tip of people’s tongues and Snowboarder Mag seems to think Luke Mitrani has got a promising chance. The Olympic site itself is saying Kevin Pierce is a top dog, but could we maybe see Danny Kass coming back for another round? There are so many people with the skill to bring it against the rest of the world’s teams, it’s gonna be one hell of a show down I promise you that.
Not only are the guys going to be battling it out, but the girls are going to be getting cut throat too. Kelly Clark is going to be looking for some redemption after her heart breaking 2006 run. Kelly threw down a run for the history books in Torino, going as big as the guys and gnarred out on every hit that would have easily given her a gold, until her last trick, a FS 900, she fell and missed the medals. But the reigning gold medalist Hanna Teter isn’t going to let her just take it, nor will silver medalist Gretchen Bleiler. These girls are going to be fighting for their spots on the team against some incredible talent, but once they’re there the fight isn’t over. At the Olympics they can still look forward to going head to head with Torah Bright, who will most likely be on the Australia team and Liu Jiayu for China.
Keep your eyes on the throw down as it happens. There are going to be five U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix Olympic qualifying competitions and it all starts December 9 at Copper Mountain. The final stop and the tell all of the entire competition will be at Park City Mountain Resort Jan. 20-23, and by the end of it we will have a shiny new halfpipe team.
Ah! It’s all so exciting, but there are way too many names to list here. So leave us note below and let everybody know who you think is gonna make the team no problem.
