Here it is, the moment we’ve all been waiting for. Chairlifts are humming their sweet murmur and bindings are clacking their way snug at a few resorts out west, and the 2011/2012 ski and snowboard season is officially underway. On Sunday, Southern California’s Mountain High made the most of some overnight snowfall and some extra snow-making shifts to become the region’s first resort to open this year.
Mountain High is sporting an 8- to 15- inch base and three lifts in operation, with a mix of terrain. A couple of rails are already in place, with more undoubtedly springing up as the snowcats start pushing everything around. The resort is open from 8:30am to 4pm daily, which is sure to cause a drop in Los Angeles area school attendance. Season passes are available for $349.
Also opening over the weekend was Colorado’s Copper Mountain. Since Copper is home to the exclusive Woodward snow park, you know they had the park in full swing for first chair. A couple of 25-foot tables, wallrides, and a whole bunch of rails lined the park, and brought out, notably, Chad Otterstrom to do some shredding. Transworld has a video of the opening at Copper, and with the way the kids in that edit are riding, you’d think it was January.
Fresh snowfall is sweeping the country, and temperatures are plummeting, so keep an eye on your local resorts, and it won’t be long before yours joins the party. Chances are, there’s even one opening somewhere near you this week!
