Mammoth Mountain Makes Some Off-Season Upgrades

Mammoth Mountain R: Derek Shea P: Eric Meyers

Mammoth Mountain has long been the standard of supreme shredding on the west coast, and this year looks like it is shaping up to be another legendary season in the high Sierras. Last winter, Mammoth Mountain broke snowfall records left and right and the chair didn’t stop spinning until the Fourth of July. Now most resorts would probably want to sit back and relax after such a long season, but Mammoth stepped up to the plate this summer and got busy with a whole slew of recently announced improvements.

For starters, its going to be easier to get there this year, as Mammoth/Yosemite airport expands flight service to include routes from San Diego and Orange County while continuing service from Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose.

Then, when you arrive at Mammoth, getting on-snow will be easier than ever thanks to a new radio-frequency ID ticketing program that allows lift tickets to be pre-loaded so you can skip the lines at the ticket office.

Next, be sure to take your fancy radio-transmitting ticket through the gates and into the lift lines quicker than ever and unfortunately presumably with less Australians to chat with. On the upper mountain there will be a shiny new high-speed quad replacing the old fixed-grip chair 5, getting you up into the pow-day playground known as Upper Dry Creek.

Down where it really matters, in the Unbound Terrain Park, the fellas have been hard at work all summer making improvements to the dirt base of both halfpipes, as well as welding up a whole new slew of features for the return of the Art Park, which this season will feature the work of Jamie Lynn. Sponsorship partners Oakley and Monster Energy will also be creating signature features for the park this season.

Oh, and they’re adding a snowtube park because, well, why not? Tubing is rad and usually makes for a fun snake at the end of the day!

Pro Skier Sammy Carlson at Snowboarder Magazine's Superpark

You read it right. Pro skier. At Snowboarder’s Superpark.

The past few year’s Snowboarder Magazine Editor Pat Bridges has extended an olive branch to the once-arch enemy of snowboarders by inviting a select few freeskiers to participate in Snowboarder Magazine’s Superpark. It is a strategic move out of respect for progression of snow sports and park building everywhere. Sammy Carlson has had the honor the past couple year’s of attending and the edit the Poor Boyz crew put together from last weeks Superpark 15 does more than justify Sammy’s presence.

Newschoolers.com put up a great interview with Sammy about his time at Superpark. Give it a read by clicking here.

Be sure to check out the Poor Boyz Productions website to find out more about their upcoming freeskiing movie set to drop this fall.

You Know Minnesota: The MN Exodus Show

If you can ride it in MN… you can ride it anywhere. Bam.

The Best Triple Yet

The triple cork has been all the rage lately. So much so that some say it’s been over-hyped. Parker White and the Level 1 film crew decided to throw in their two cents about it. Hilarity ensues.

A Jet Pack for Skiing?

Came across this little gem today at GrindTV.com. Troy Hartman from Mammoth Lakes, CA has come up with a whole new way to ski, by strapping a jet pack onto his back.

According to the post on GrindTV.com, Hartman has been clocked at upwards of 47 miles an hour… uphill.

Although it we admit it looks pretty fun, we can honestly say we won’t have personal skiing jet packs for sale here at The House, at least not in the near future. To read more about this crazy invention follow the link here.

House Boardshop at SIA: MegaPost

This past weekend The House Boardshop crew headed over to the Rocky Mountains to the Snow Sports Industry Association’s annual tradeshow in Denver, CO to check out the new product that all your favorite brands will be offering up next year. The crew spent three days checking out thousands of new products and technology with the intention of bringing the best and most bad-ass new gear to our fans and loyal customers.

We’ll be bringing you sneak peaks of 2012 product over the course of the next couple weeks, but aside from that here’s a bonus gallery of some of the antic’s surrounding the crew’s trip when they weren’t busy weeding through product and meeting with industry folks. (Admittedly, there may have been some business mixed with pleasure throughout the course of the trip- as tends to happen at industry gatherings such as SIA.)

#fnl @ PC!

Once upon a time, myself and some friends from the East Coast drove across country to the lauded slopes of the High Sierras in hopes of making the big time. Our route took us through Utah, and just outside of Salt Lake City our friend Ben was practically assaulted by a lunatic homosexual. I’m the furthest thing from a homophobe, do your thing, but this guy was a lunatic with a penchant for my friend. Then, about a year later, we went to a rail contest at Park City and I was robbed of my jacket and scarf in the blink of an eye. Then, on the way home from that trip, a convenience store clerk had the cops chase us down because we mentioned how excited we were to set off fireworks in the desert.

Lucky for you, its a new year with new beginnings, and my friends in Utah assure me that the place has really cleaned itself up over the last few seasons. So don’t be afraid to head up to Park City for the Friday Night Live rail jam series this winter. Beginning Friday at 4pm, its an all-out assault on the registration table to be one of the first and only 100 to sign up and throw down ten bucks.

The set up is going to have five features, so you can proudly show off your quiver of tricks on all things jib in the quest for the cash prizes up for grabs. Skullcandy DJs will provide the beats, you provide the action. Skiers, snowboarders, pros, girls and newbs are all invited to compete in their own divisions. Check out Park City for more details, and if you can’t make this one, mark your calendar for the next events on February 18 and March 4!

Chutes, Icefalls, and POW in Vermont

Think Vermont is just about parks, halfpipes, and maple syrup? Think again. Powder shredding in Vermont is unique—and fleeting—catch it while you can. This is a great compilation from Chris Nelson, who captured the best of winter 09-10 in his own backyard.

Game On at Silverton!

Skiing (3) 10-6-10 Silverton Mtn

Silverton Mountain is notorious for early-season snow—it sits at 12,000-plus feet in Colorado’s San Juan Range. Silverton is renowned for being the highest elevation ski area in North America, and also the home of handcrafted Venture Snowboards. Once again, they are shredding earlier than the rest of us. Opening day is scheduled for Dec. 4—if this keeps up, maybe earlier…
