Oakdale Skate Session

It’s rad to have a boss that tells you to go skate in the middle of the day.  With the sun beating down and a slight breeze the Oakdale Skatepark was a perfect session location.  Shane Weber the Assistant Shop Manager was down for a little break and new shop rider Danny Kern was over-stoked to get a few clips.  Here’s what went down… Read More

Larry Stevenson- The Godfather of Skateboarding- Dies at the Age of 81

RIP Larry Stevenson

On March 25th, 2012, Larry Stevenson, Skateboard Hall of Famer and founder of Makaha Skateboards, passed away passed at the age of 81.  In the late 1950s Larry Stevenson was a lifeguard at Venice Beach and  saw a the potential in skateboarding.  At the time a skateboard was nothing more then a roller skate nailed to 2×4.  He took the basic concept behind the skateboard and took it to the next level with the addition of clay wheels and a surfboard inspired design.

He used the popularity of  surfing to bring skateboarding to new heights. In 1965 Larry was producing over 2,000 skate boards a day and almost every kid who surfed or wanted to surfed owned one.  In 1969 he patented the kick tail design, which would forever chance the sport as we know it. Like many innovators he was way ahead of the times. It took nearly 20 years for his twin kick tail design to catch on.

Larry also put together the first skateboard team in 1963 with …Bruce Logan, Woody Woodward, Danny Bearer, Scott Archer, Gregg Carroll, John Fries, Joey Saenz, George Trafton jr, and Squeek Blank.  – From makahaskateboards.com

Off The Grid – Davis Torgerson

Off The Grid – Davis Torgerson

As an avid skateboarder I can understand the frustrations of skating the same spots day in and day out.  Yes, skating will always be a fun way to express yourself creatively, but when you’ve done every trick on the same down rail, stair set, or bowl it can feel too routine.  I’m going to take the same approach to choosing a new skate spot like Davis Torgerson did; by throwing a dart at an over sized map, not of Southern California, but of Minneapolis.  Step number 1: find an oversized map of Minneapolis.  Step number 2: pray to God that it doesn’t land on North Minneapolis.  Wish me luck.

Carlsbad Gap Torn Down

Carlsbad Gap

When the Carlsbad High School was built in 1957 no one thought the eleven step stair set on the Southern side of the campus would become one of the world’s most challenging and recognizable skate spots. In 2006 the Carlsbad Unified School District approved a decision to demolish the school in order to build a new school.  It wasn’t until 2008 that rumors drifted around within the skateboarding community about the Carlsbad Gap demolition.   Fast forward to Thursday February 23rd, 2012 and a skateboarding landmark has its last day.  How long will it be before a skate plaza duplicates the Carlsbad Gap?  Read More

Snow Skate Video

This is by far one the best snow skating video we have ever seen. Who knew that riding a snow skate could be so much fun.

Let us know what your favorite snow skating video is.

Wednesday Web Gems

  • This week’s Wednesday Web Gems casts a wide net for an even split in skateboard and snowboard news. Despite Germany’s track record for designing all sorts of clever things, the incredible comfort of Gravis shoes, however, comes from Burlington, Vermont. Gravis team rider Steve Fortsner is from Germany though, and he took some time away from driving crazy fast on ze autobahn and getting served frothy mugs from babes in lederhosen to film this video part. There’s something to be said for the unassuming bystanders in skateboarding videos. You know the one, casually walking through the shot with no idea what’s going on around them, and Forstner bags a good one here.
  • Speaking of quality design, Nixon Watches just added Torey Pudwill to their already stacked team and they’ve got the videos to prove it
  • The Cliche team is having a demo at The Berrics Plaza in Los Angeles on Friday, November 4. Head there around 4pm to catch Joey Brezinski and the team.
  • Following in the footsteps of Zac Marben’s art show in Laguna Beach, AR4T is holding the opening reception for Corey Smith’s show on Thursday night at 7pm.
  • Arbor Snowboards added wooden hardrail enthusiast Curtis Woodman to the team.
  • LRG is throwing a season kickoff party up in Salt Lake City next Monday with tons of giveaways and music, and probably plenty of pros waiting for the lifts to spin.

43 Magazine Launches

Remember the days before the internet? When instant gratification just meant landing your first kickflip pushing out of the driveway, instead of knowing who has the ender in the next big video before it even comes out? Or knowing the winning trick at a contest the minute four wheels hit the ground? In these nostalgic times of days gone by, you waited patiently by the mailbox for your magazine subscription to show up, and you got fresh photographs and witty words about your favorite professional skaters and their globetrotting adventures. These days it seems like some magazines out there are just regurgitations of content that you’ve already seen on the internet, but 43 Magazine is out to change that.

Based in New York City (still the world’s greatest skateboarding city) 43 Magazine recently held a launch party for their premiere issue in WeHo, and they’re planning on having this sort of art gallery/launch party every other month when fresh pages hit the newsstand. Allen Ying’s video here is from the KickStarter campaign he used to get the necessary funds to get this thing off the ground. If you’ve ever had an awesome idea of your own, by the way, KickStarter is the place to get some financial backing, so check those guys out too.

43 Magazine is available in skateshops everywhere, but with the artsy, grassroots feel of the mag we’re sure they’ll go quick. Keep an eye on 43magazine.com or find them on Facebook for news about upcoming shows. With the first one in New York, we can only assume that the next one will be in San Francisco, but you keep crossing those fingers and maybe it’ll be your town.

Grady Brannan…Blowing Up

About a month ago we gave you a gallery from Bay Area photog Grady Brannan. Well Mr. Brannan has had quite a month since then, with a full-length interview and residency as the current featured artist over on (HY.GEN.IC). There’s a whole album’s worth of the kid’s pics over there, alongside an eloquent introduction by Seth Millstein and Corbin Cones doing the dirty work.

(HY.GEN.IC) is a site committed to exposing the great artists of our time, no matter which medium they choose. Once you get done with Grady’s interview it’ll be well worth your while to click around and get inspired by some of the great people they feature on the site. And if you’re as sold on him as we are, be sure to bookmark his page, gradybrannan.com.

This gallery here has a little pool flavor for the dogtownies out there, and the interview gives you a glimpse at the man himself, along with some lovely lifestyles of some of San Francisco’s beautiful people.
