Nyjah Three-Peats at Street League AZ

The Street League DC Pro fueled by Monster Energy hit the hot streets of Glendale, Arizona this weekend and Nyjah Huston won the event for the third time in a row. Coming into this event, Huston was in first place in the overall standings, and he kept the momentum going in the Southwest.

Huston has been slaying these custom-made courses all summer long, even with talent like Ryan Sheckler, Paul Rodriguez, and Chris Cole breathing down his neck. The riders all seemed to agree that the Arizona course was the gnarliest yet, but it definitely allowed the creme de la creme to shine through as you can see from the Transworld edit.

Some of the highlights of the afternoon included Chris Cole’s back 270 boardslide and terrifyingly-awesome tre flip to fake 50-50. Sheckler had some switch-ups goodies on the flat bar while Luan Olivera put down some super technical stuff on the bump-to-gap. Paul Rodriguez didn’t win Best Trick, but his back tail pull back flip was easily my favorite of the day. Official honors went to Chris Cole.

In the end, little 16-year-old Nyjah Huston was the big winner, and with a sweep of the first three events he’s sitting pretty going into the championships out in Jersey on August 28. Mark your calendars and tune into ESPN for all the action. Or, if you’re in the area, click on over to the Street League site for tickets and catch it live.

Rob Dyrdek Stoner Skate Plaza

We had so much fun earlier in the week at the Rob Dyrdek Charmette Bonpua Plaza that we decided to give another one of his creations a go, so we pushed on over to the Stoner Park in westside Los Angeles. The Stoner Park—and yes, it’s really called that—is not the place to go if you’re feeling lazy and sluggish. In fact, it’d probably be more fitting to call it boner park for how excited we were to lay eyes upon it.

Rob Dyrdek's Westside Plaza

The Stoner Skate Plaza weighs in at 20,000-square-feet, and if you’re into street skating its probably the best park you’ll find in all of California. On one side of the park is a series of manual pads and ledges that evoke memories of the old Love Park. In the middle is a big ledge with a small ledge to manual pad next to it in order to satisfy all your combo desires. Check out that ramp-to-ramp too…a little intimidating at first, but hop over it once and you’re partying for the rest of the day.

There’s only one quarterpipe in the entire park, so leave your knee pads at home, but definitely come here ready to skate. To get the scoop on all of Mr. Dyrdek’s projects, cruise on over to robdyrdekfoundation.org where you can find out about all his plazas and even get a start on convincing him to build one in your town next! This one’s located at 1835 Stoner Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90025.

Stand Up Paddle Boarding The Mississippi River

Starting on June 1st, Minnesota native Alex Linnell departed Lake Itasca, the headwaters of the great Mississippi River, on a journey to the Gulf of Mexico via Stand Up Paddle Boarding. Alex is trying to raise money for people affected by natural disasters like the recent floods, tornadoes and wildfires. If you would like to donate click here!

To put his epic journey into perspective the average surface speed of the Mississippi water is near 1.2 mph – roughly 1/3 as fast as people walk.  When the water reaches New Orleans the river increases its flow to that of 3 mph on average. This would mean that in optimal conditions Alex could travel at a top speed of around 5 mph.

Now put on your math caps. He is traveling 2,400 miles down river and is paddling for approximately eight hours a day and camping each night.  How long will it take him to reach his Gulf of Mexico destination?

Wow! Middle School math class flashback…

Answer: It will take Alex, with optimal conditions, about 60 days to complete this adventure. If he were to chill and float south at the rivers natural flow of three mph it would take him nearly 100 days. So let’s give Alex some incentive for his paddling… donate if you can!

To keep up to date on Alex’s progress head over to his site and check on his progress.

Multiple World Records

Alex has the possibility of triumphing over a few records as he heads South. If he completes his task he will be the 1st person to Stand Up Paddle Board the entire length of the Mississippi River. As an added bonus, if Alex paddles 2,350 miles down the Mississippi he will surpass the World Record set by Tom Jones (1507 mile) for the longest Stand Up Paddle Board trip set in the summer of 2010 when Jones paddled from Key West, FL to New York City.

Jimmy Briggs Front Nose

California skate parks usually consist of about seventy percent bowls and pools that somehow continue to linger around long past the era of dogtown. Rob Dyrdek is an Ohio-born street skater who saw the need to change this trend. Thank god for that, because through his success and philanthropy, he is bringing real street skating to safe areas around Los Angeles. He now has four Safe Spot Skate Spots littered about the city of angels, the newest being the Charmette Bonpua Skate Plaza.

LA skate plaza

Half-Cab Flip on the bank

This 15,000-square-foot plaza is located within the confines of the giant Rancho Cienega Park sports facility, which is sure to assuage any parent’s worries about their kids being on the streets or in unsafe areas. The stuff he and California Skateparks designed for the plaza is sure to stoke out anyone who wanders their way into the area, as well as the solid crew of locals.

Aimed at pleasing street skaters, the plaza has two huge banks, flat ledges, down ledges, rails and stair sets. Everything in this place is so perfectly finished that you probably won’t even need to bring your own wax. The details are perfectly constructed, like the iron-edged ledges and smooth-as-a-Senator concrete everywhere. Start out on the curb to get warm, take it to the flat ledge over the stairs, and then see if you can hunker down on the hubba. There’s no cover charge to get in or hoodlums lurking in the shadows, the only thing you ought to be wary of are errant soccer balls coming off the nearby field. Stop by on a weekend and there will be plenty of food and drink vendors around the fields so you can comfortably spend the day here.

The plaza is located at 5001 Rodeo Rd, Los Angeles, CA — and on this side of town don’t you dare pronounce it roh-day-oh.

Davin's getting a Mini Van

Those of you who are getting on with life, you know, like buying a house and having kids, you know that eventually your car needs to adapt to your new needs.

Now I don’t mean to call out one of our own but I will. Davin is dealing with some inner demons as it relates to selling his Mazda and stepping into the Soccer Mom world of Mini Vans. Now Davin can still ride with the best of them and is sick when it comes to kite boarding…so we’re sure that it will not be all PTA meetings and Little League in his future.

So good luck Davin. Enjoy your new ride. Here’s hoping that you can roll like these fools.

Stayin' Gold

When you spend the better part of a decade filming a video it’s not surprising to find out that there’s a lot of extra footage. You can only make a skate flick so long before you start losing the interest of the crowd. It’s a double-edged sword, you want your whole video to be bangin’, and each rider wants the ender but sometimes the video is so good that kids get all amped up and turn it off to go do their own skating. With this in mind, Emerica let loose their epic Stay Gold feature earlier this year, but kept a little hell in hand called the B-Sides.

The B-Sides hold all the shots that didn’t make the final cut for each rider’s part, and Emerica has been releasing them every now and then, with each part quickly becoming skate park chatter later in the day. Most recently, Aaron Suski hit the airwaves, and most of the Stay Gold riders are already up. If this is the first you’ve heard of the B-Sides, start with Andrew Reynolds, and then let your secret skate crushes guide you through the rest of the rider list.

Each segment is a healthy dose too, with most weighing in at five or six minutes, so sit back and make yourself a bookmark because you’re sure to want more. It’s also probably the best skate footage we’ll have until Transworld puts the final touches on their video.

Pinball Skateboard Park. Say What?

Add this to the list of incredibly awesome ideas. A Pinball machine themed skatepark. You’ll have to fly to New Zealand to try and score Multiball though. The park is located in a suburb of Auckland.

Click thru the Read More to watch Mike Bancroft throw down in the park as well as check out a “making of” vid.
